Aquaculture is the farming of aquatic organisms such as fish, crustaceans and molluscs, as well as the cultivation of aquatic plants in fresh or salt water. It is one of the fastest growing food production sectors in the world, and the abundance of fresh and salt water in Canada provides ideal conditions for aquaculture production.

Fish farming accounts for more than two-thirds of Canada’s aquaculture production. In addition, Canada is one of the largest suppliers of salmon in the world thanks to its farmed salmon, and almost all of its production is concentrated in British Columbia and New Brunswick. In addition, Canada’s fishing industry exports more than 75% of the products harvested and processed in Canada.

There are approximately 26 species of fish farmed in Canada, and the most common species are salmon, trout, Arctic char, sablefish, tilapia and halibut. The majority of fish farms in Canada are located on the east and west coasts of the country, while freshwater trout farms can be found in almost every province.
